South Carolina native Richard Samuel Roberts, a self-taught African-American photographer, took pictures of the segregated Black District of Columbia from 1922 until his death in 1936. These photographs include every facet of Roberts’ world, highlighting the rise of an economically secure middle class through portraits of bankers, social workers, teachers and even magicians. This collection of images captures the important visual history of Columbia’s African-American community in the early 20th century.
